Knicks Fandom: An Illness That Keeps On Giving

There’s a large photograph of me in the foyer of my Mom’s house. In said photo, I’m 9, at Disney World, being hugged by Pluto. Many of the awkward trappings of the age-serious buckteeth, shorts and high socks, a fanny pack(!)-are all on display and commented upon by any guest unfortunate enough to see it. There is one aspect of my 9-year-old self that I’m quite proud of, however, and that’s the Knicks Starter hat that I’m wearing. I’ve been a devotee for as long as I can remember. When I played basketball in the driveway, I was Patrick Ewing. Watching Charles Smith not put the ball in the basket makes me tear up instantly (so much so that I’m not even going to link to the video for fear that I might accidentally watch it myself). I have a “Nobody Beats The Wiz” baseball hat signed by Charles Oakley. In short, the Knicks. I weathered the storm of the 2000s, and was excited by the prospect of the Donnie Walsh era.

This summer I was prepared to walk away.

Why this summer? In short, because of this. To me, the Jeremy Lin incident symbolized everything wrong with the Knicks on an organizational level. James Dolan’s vanity. The discovery of an asset only to let that asset leave without receiving anything for it. Letting the most uplifting aspect of any Knicks team since 2001 walk out the door for nothing. It was unfathomable, and I still don’t support it.

I decided that, as long as the Knicks were owned by James Dolan, they would continue to frustrate me to no end, and I started taking steps to remove them from my life. I un-bookmarked the excellent Posting and Toasting. I stopped following Knicks beat writers on Twitter (sorry, Alan Hahn). I changed the ESPN widget on my phone so it no longer alerted me to the score of Knicks games at the end of each quarter. When a friend asked me about Amar’e Stoudemire’s injury status, I truthfully replied that I didn’t know. I convinced myself that it was over.

What happened next? Well, in short, the Knicks started the season as the best team in basketball, including a 20 point thumping of the Heat on opening night and a major 4th quarter comeback against the Spurs in San Antonio, as seen here:

They also brought Rasheed Wallace out of retirement to reclaim his mantle as “most interesting NBA player”, and so far he has not disappointed:

The final nail: The Bucks’ season ticket office (Note: I currently live in Milwaukee) called and offered me free tickets to an upcoming game in an effort to sell me a season ticket package that will be hopelessly futile because I’m moving in two months (I see you, Chicago) and because the tickets are cheaper on StubHub. The free game? Wednesday night against the Knicks.

And so I will go, as it was written in the stars, and I will ooh and aah at a Tyson Chandler outback dunk, and I will marvel at JR Smith’s willingness to play defense, and delight in a Raymond Felton who finally discovered a weight room. Slowly but surely, Posting and Toasting will be bookmarked again. The transgressions of the past will not be forgotten, but my future nevertheless belongs to the Knicks.

That’s Sergio Romo, San Francisco Giants closer, the guy who froze Miguel Cabrera on a gutsy fastball. I guess it’s not surprising that he’s equally gutsy in terms of his shirt choices.

“I Just Look Illegal”. It’s a hell of a message, and one that American society needs rubbed in its face a little bit. This election has been one of the most contentious in recent memory, and that contentiousness is in no small part because of race. It’s the underlying message of a large chunk of both the official Romney/Ryan campaign as well as the usual collection of blowhard pundits.

It’s sad, really, especially for those of us who have bought into the idea of a multicultural America where our differences are not just tolerated but actually celebrated and incorporated into our daily lives, but there’s a large percentage of America that doesn’t agree.

This was easy for me, because I grew up in suburban New Jersey, which has large populations of a wide variety of ethnicities. Multiethnic communities were never anything I really had to think about. They were just there. Living in Wisconsin now, I can see how more rural areas of this country develop more xenophobic attitudes. The fear of the unknown looms large in the heart of rural America.

There is perhaps no better forum for this sort of political statement than in the game of baseball, a sport that continues to grapple with its own racial history and politics, and the complicated demographics of the people who play and watch it.

Sergio Romo lives in a country where racial profiling still exists in a number of very real and life-altering ways, and his bold self-expression is a reminder that collectively, as a society, we have a long way to go. There are some who may complain that politics doesn’t belong in sports, but it would be far worse for Romo to just put on a smile and pretend he didn’t care. And look at that picture again: he’s still smiling and happy and reveling in the joy that is the Giants’ victory. He’s also reminding you that one victory doesn’t make everything all right.

…or not. The Rockets are making me consider League Pass already. James Harden had 37 points and 12 assists in this game. He’s been a Rocket for 72 hours. Lin didn’t out up a colossal stat line, but he looked like the guy we all fell in love with last year. Look out, NBA.
